If you’re an animal lover, you will probably find the amount of animal cruelty that exists in today’s world downright depressing. You might hate to going to the circus, knowing that many wild and exotic animals are trained through physically abusive methods that include beating, whipping, and poking the animals with sharp objects to force them to learn their routines. It might break your heart to know that, when not performing, many of the animals are kept chained up in cramped stalls and cages. You might not like the idea of using animals for scientific research. You might refuse to eat meat. You certainly disapprove of the use of fur for fashion purposes, and you don’t find dog or cock fighting to be the least bit entertaining.

If you want to share you passion for animals with your kids, you can find a useful educational tool in your satellite TV. Animal Cops is a family-oriented reality show on the Animal Planet channel that focuses on the efforts of animal welfare units to investigate and rescue neglected, abused, and abandoned animals. It began in 2002 and followed the cases of four animal cruelty investigators. The show can be graphic at times, especially if you’re watching in HD, and covers some topics that can be difficult for young kids to handle, like euthanasia (although the procedure itself isn’t shown), and the show comes with a parental discretion advisory. The show has been praised for raising awareness about the mistreatment of animals and was recognized at the 2003 Genesis Awards, which is an awards show sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States that highlights media contributions to animal rights causes around the globe.

Though parts of the show may be disturbing, episodes always include some happy endings, with compassionate people setting positive examples by caring for the abused animals. Loyal followers of the show are relieved to see many of the animals on the road to recovery, and their abusers penalized or behind bars. It’s a good way to approach difficult topics, like what it means to put and animal “to sleep,” and open up a dialogue with your children about the importance of taking good care of pets and the consequences of neglecting them. You can also teach your kids how to be responsible citizens by discussing what to do when they witness an animal suffering. Talk about how to report such cases and who to contact in your area. Maybe your children will be inspired to volunteer at a shelter.

Get the feeling of being face-to-face with your favorite animals by watching Animal Planet, rather than taking your kids to the zoo, where animals are confined in upsetting conditions. Along the same lines as Animal Cops, Animal Precinct shows agents fighting crimes against animals in New York City. Pet owners might also enjoy World’s Ugliest Dog, which tells the beautiful stories of ugly animals, and SuperFetch, which shows non-abusive ways to teach pets amazing tricks. Many shows are available in high-definition, which gives a realistic quality to the images on your screen.

Being a parent is a tremendous responsibility – you are tasked with teaching your children some of the most important things in the world, and the ideas you pass on to them will stay with them for the rest of their lives. We live in an era of incredible globalisation so it is no longer enough to just teach your kids about their immediate surroundings, they need to become acquainted with the whole world and have an understanding of the many different cultures out there. Travel is an incredibly powerful way to achieve this, and you should begin taking them on trips at an early age.

It is important to go with your children to countries which have vastly different cultures than your own. So if you are a Canadian there is not much to be gained from travelling to the United States; on the other hand, venturing to India will show your kids a riot of different images, people and cultural displays that they will have never even imagined. So travel as far and as widely as you can: go to China, Argentina, France, Slovenia and many other unexpected and fabulous places – and while there take the time to wander through markets and chat with locals with your children in tow. This experience will stick with them for the rest of their lives.

If you have an upcoming trip to an exciting destination you should use it as a good excuse to teach your child about a new culture. They will be inherently interested in this because of their coming journey, and their work will be rewarded when they get to see the things they read about in real life. There are some truly great tools for this – a natural place to start is with a visual encyclopaedia which will give your child an idea of the geography and some common images which their imagination will be able to latch on to. You can also pick up more specialised book, but be sure to keep it simple if you have young kids: you don’t want to turn them off with inaccessible books.

Finally, you should encourage your teenagers to travel independently once they are old enough: this is a slightly nervy proposition and you need to ensure that they do so safely. However, it is important to encourage your kids to be adventurous and to take advantage of their opportunity to see all the world has to offer.

Of course travel is far more than just an educational tool. Indeed, cheap holidays in Ibiza may not be a learning experience yet they are a great deal of fun. So be sure to take some trips which are all about letting your stress slip away, while others can be about exploring all the wonders this great planet has to offer. Travel is a wonderful thing and you should encourage responsible travelling in your children – by getting them out into the world you’ll be giving them a gift they’ll be able to enjoy for the rest of their lives.

These days, it seems a teacher can’t turn around without seeing a student with those signature white headphones covertly hanging from his or her ears. Rather than fight the iPod epidemic, teachers can use it to their advantage.

In a 2007 article, the Pew Research Center reported that more than half of American teens own an iPod or MP3 player. The number is up from 1% in 2003 and expected to keep on rising (Pew Research Center/2006 Harrison Group). Since students are spending numerous hours a day listening to their iPods, they can become an invaluable tool for teachers who want to tap into students’ interests.

Apple offers free educational tools, educator-created lesson plans, downloads, podcasts and more with iTunes U but there are endless possibilities beyond what Apple has to offer.

Here are a few more creative ways to integrate iPods into the classroom activities, homework assignments and general learning strategies.

Classroom Podcasts

Since some students retain more through sound than sight, podcasts can provide an alternate study aid to traditional book chapters. You can record entire lectures, classroom discussion, review games or short topic summaries. The most effective podcasts are typically 6-10 minutes long.

Audacity offers free podcasting software and an easy-to understand tutorial for beginners.

Audiobooks

Now is the time to expand a child’s iPod world. Audiobooks can make reading a more recreational activity for busy students. They can listen while exercising, driving or sitting on the bus. Student Projects

Using the same techniques detailed in the podcast section, have students produce their own music, old-fashioned radio broadcast, theatrical readings of plays and stories, or news shows. They can record video or audio as an MP3, post it online, and share it with the class.

Language Learning

Whether you’re working with ESL students or teaching a foreign language, bringing a language to life will make it infinitely easier for students. Students can listen to fluent speakers for extra practice outside class or record themselves to work on pronunciation.

If you already have tapes or CDs, students can upload them to iTunes and their media player.
